About
Synaptic PT is a visual experience about branching patterns that repeat throughout nature, across multiple media and multiple scales. Starting from Portugal’s road network, the territory reveals itself as a living structure, where each route propagates like a nerve impulse, a growing root, a river seeking its bed, or lightning drawing its paths of least resistance through space. The project uses real data and routes calculated by a routing engine. Each journey begins from a neural centre and follows the most efficient road geometry towards thousands of populated localities. The animation is paced by the travel times associated with each route, so the expansion across the map follows the temporal logic of the calculated journeys. More than representing roads, Synaptic PT seeks to make visible a language shared by natural forms: tree branches, water grooves, neural networks in the brain, electrical discharges, and all the patterns that emerge when energy, matter, life, or movement distribute themselves in search of paths of least resistance.
